If she wanted to go somewhere she liked, she would have gone to the woods. If she wanted to be around others, she would have gone to the park. But, instead, she went somewhere else. The library. She had been meaning to do this for awhile now. She was in the fantasy section, looking through books of mythical creatures and medieval myths. But there was nothing she was looking for.
With a sigh that was both one of lost hope and the obvious feeling of boredom, she picked up the next one. It had been the last she could find, though she was sure there was more. She scanned the contents first, but, as usual, it all seemed a bit vague. And so came scanning the pages. She leaned back in the chair, which was, at the very least, comfortable. Probably the only thing she was happy about.
She caught the word 'dragon' and her attention was kept for but a moment, before her hope faded again. Gold and red. At least draca, her bloodline and the creature she was searching for, were distinguishable from dragons by color. But, as with all myths, legends, and the like, they kept mentioning other colors. Even white would have been wonderful. After all, there was the occasional albino in her heritage. She was one of them. But the ones she had found so far were certainly not draca. She turned the page again and froze.
'Draca'
A creature said to have been made by alchemist Hadrian Cartwright. Old stories and myths about these creatures tend to be few and far between, but could possibly intertwine with others about dragons. These draca were supposed to be men with the capability of turning into dragons, and warriors that could beat the strongest of any king's army. However, little more is known.
Vitae scowled. I already know that! These books are useless! Annoyed and angry at this complete waste of time, she slapped the front cover back over to close it, sending up a cloud of dust that filled the draca's sensitive nostrils. She pulled back to try and avoid it, but it didn't help and she sneezed three times in quick succession.
Why do I even bother...
She grumbled as she picked the book up and lifted it high to get it on the shelf. After it was back up there, she took a quick cursory glance, in a last, futile attempt to find another book that just might have something she didn't know.
It didn't happen, of course, so it wasn't long before she left again, wandering down and hopping into the subway through a grate in the ground, dropping in. It was an abandoned track, one that had been out of use for quite some time. It was safer for her down there, almost no one and big enough that if she changed, she wouldn't cause any damage that would be noticed.

RESPONSIBILITIES, quite troublesome to say the least. being the leader of a gang- it wasn't easy. but he definitely made it so it would seem that way. he didn't want anyone to see him appear weak. he wasn't weak. at least he surely didn't think so.
COCKY thinking, something kishou was fantastic at. he could do anything he wanted. he could make any conversation go the way he wanted. anything. his thought pattern was hard to curve, he'd started thinking that way a mere three years after he killed his own parents. he hadn't wanted to remain depressed or unhappy. that wasn't how he wanted to be.
KISHOU was lost in his own thoughts until he heard those footsteps. the red haired man did not move, just listening as the footsteps grew nearer. the only thing that startled him was the soft, barely audible footsteps that joined the first pair. whole body stiffening, the demon narrowed his eyes, struggling to see the creator of the footsteps.
ONLY when the second pair of footsteps quickened, did kishou realize that whoever was creating them had ill intentions. not caring enough to be silent like he was used to, the red haired demon leapt into the air, that long hair of his fanning around him. so used to the actions, kishou pulled the scythe from his neck, it instantly enlarging to about six feet tall, slightly taller than he.
FEET connected with the second pair of footsteps' creator's chest, knocking them to the ground. scythe pointed at the throat of the attacker, he bared his teeth. with his blue eye shut to avoid it being seen, his green eye focused on the- what appeared to be a girl- he questioned:
'YOU okay?' which was odd. kishou wasn't one to interfere with the 'natural order of things.' yet, here he was doing as such. he didn't take the time to question himself, just awaiting an answer- something. --- words; three hundred eighty four notes; sorry for being a little ramble-y and weird in this. i haven't roleplayed as a human in quite a while XD it's weird.

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z431/poshiloh/Written%20in%20the%20Stars/middle-1.png][scrolly:h(282),w(236),sy] She hadn't heard the footsteps, not until it was too late to do anything herself. She cursed her draca hearing, terrible as it was. It hadn't helped that the stench of the train that used to come through here still lingered, strong enough that, with the slight wind blowing behind her instead of toward her, all of it pretty much made her nose useless. She'd smelt this one, though, the red head who had leaped in to save her.
Not that it had mattered. The startle sent her reeling backwards with shock, stumbling and nearly falling to her back until she felt the familiar tingle then snap of bones. Yet, with the lessened threat, she already felt it slowing, stopping. Not soon enough. With a sharp intake of breath, strangled in her throat, her shoulder blades cracked and split, right up to where they met and down her back a bit. And then, skin stretched, tore, and white wings, not truly feathered but coated with scales longer than necessary. Clearly reptilian, not angelic, yet almost a mix of both. They flailed against the backward motion, the stirring of air catching her and the bones smoothing over, skin healing to merge neatly at the base of the wings. And then the recovery stopped, the adrenaline ceased to flow, and she knew the pain would be coming soon.
Fine, thank you.
She managed to spit the words out in a burst of breath, as if she'd just been running a marathon and hardly had enough in her lungs to get even those three words out. Still, the pain could be worse, she could have changed fully. Then, she realized the situation. Him, and her, a demon - by scent - and a draca. Except for all she knew, demons had the same hatred for her kind that humans had. For all she knew, they had been in on the massacre of her people. Fear clenched her heart and she began stumbling backwards, down the tunnel, away from him. Her wings hung limply behind her, hindering her in their weakness. If she was able to ignore the pain, they'd be useful, but she couldn't just blink the feeling of being stabbed in the shoulders away like she'd be able to given a year, or two, of changes. When she stumbled, careening backwards, her wings flared out again, but this time, with no adrenaline, the pain was too great. Her eyes squeezed shut and she let herself just fall, pulling into herself, trying hard to ignore what would be about to happen, what he'd do to her. And yet, all that flashed before her eyes was images of the suffering her kind had faced. And it simple made the fear worse.

'HEH, yeah, you're welcome,' the cocky demon said, his hair brushing over one shoulder as he shifted his stance. one handed-ly, he bashed the blunt end of his scythe into the head of one who had been about to attack the girl. merely knocking him unconscious, kishou did not want to startle this stranger while she was filled with so much fear. he kicked the- from the body shape, a man to the side, though he never took his eyes off of the girl.
NOT only did he have no idea what she could do, there was something different about her, that he was interested in. there was not a time when he'd met someone such as she and he truly wanted to learn more about her. but what he had not been expecting- was for her to try to run away- backwards of all the ways she could have, especially with those wings. yet, he couldn't bring himself to be really surprised, due to the pain he could scent wafting from her in waves.
WHEN she fell, kishou approached her finally, silent, slow steps. not wanting to approach her too fast, he kept low, and it took a minute or so for him to be able to tower over her. knowing that sent a bad image most likely, the demon crouched down, his thin black tail silently drooping to the ground.
'HEY. what are you doing? do you think i would have saved you if i had any ill-intent towards you?' he questioned the downed female. he appeared calm, not threatening in the least at the moment, actually looking quite bored, a lazy look on his face.

He hadn't shown any sign of meaning to hurt her, but still the memories of her deceased brethren plagued her, thinking only of what his intent might have been - save the glory of killing a draca, a royal one, all for himself. Not that he had any idea who, or what, she was, but she couldn't help picturing the worst circumstance. Still, his words brought around the sense in her. She couldn't slow her heart, pumping feverishly warm blood through her veins as it always did, but biting her lower lip a moment managed to drag her to a more reasonable conclusion, the one she should have initially made - that he, honestly, was just trying to help.
Her eyes didn't have to skim the darkness to know the the tail's presence, or anything else strange about him. Her nose told her what he was, the memories of her people allowed her to fathom a guess as to how he should look. Still, she took a cursory glance to confirm. Better safe than sorry. She didn't always scent both halves when something was of mixed blood, after all, and it was always possible.
Better... safe than sorry.
The first word was nearly stuttered, causing pause before she rushed out the last three words with a false confidence that was, no doubt, entirely see through. So he wasn't going to kill her, not ow anyway. But that hardly meant he'd accept what she was. She was from a long line of nothing more than experimental creatures, after all. The creation of a madman with a vision, nothing more. Why would anyone bother with something like that? A flaw of nature, nothing more. They all came from something, some sort of evolution, but not her. Not her race. And that thought sent her eyes straight to the ground, unable to meet his own, trying to shift her wings a bit, to get them to not be so pinned at the edges - but even that made them feel like they were being stabbed by a million knives. She couldn't stop the hiss, a hiss far more draconic than human. The pain would fade, yes, but it would take its sweet time doing so, it would seem. She almost wished she'd changed fully. At least she could still breath fire and had size to her advantage then, at least, against most dangers in this city.

YET, as he normally did, he could not find satisfaction in this girl's face while he saw that fear lingering there. he only felt slightly regretful. he hadn't wanted her to be afraid of him. clearly- he had no idea it was because he was a demon, he figured it was because of what had just occurred.
ONLY when the girl said better safe than sorry, did any visible reaction come from the demon for quite a while. a hearty laugh, his head thrown back, was released from kishou's throat. hair drifting over his shoulders and on to his back, his laughing fit went on for a mere minute, before he hunched back over forward. with one hand, he brought his hair forward once again, with the other hand on his stomach. he hadn't had that good of a laugh in a long time. both eyes had closed during the laughter, and he only opened the left eye, once again.
WITH no explanation for his laughing fit, the demon leaned back on the balls of his feet, his forearms resting upon his knees as he remained in his crouched position. thoughtfully watching the white haired girl, he looked over her features that could maybe tell what she was. so she had reptilian-like wings, white hair...
AND he had no idea what she was. her scent was slightly familiar, but not enough so that he could figure out what she was. and he hated guessing. he might as well just ask her, it wasn't as if he was not blunt at all.
'WHAT are you?' the red-haired demon questioned, leaning forward on the balls of his feet now.
'AND don't worry, sweetie. i gain no advantage over you in knowing. i'm just curious is all. i'm not gunna hurt you. really. but someone else will, with you stumblin` and flappin` on like you did a few minutes ago.' he smirked - though only cockily, not evilly, knowing he did have some sort of advantage over her. knowing that. he didn't want the advantage for anything though, but just to have.

What was so funny? Perhaps the use of a cliche. Or maybe he was just insane. Or, even, any combination of those with a few other things, she supposed. She wasn't a psychic - nor did she ever wish to be. She had enough with her own problems, she didn't need to know about others.
Then he asked his question and she flinched. She would answer, of course she would - if only to hopefully avoid any potential conflict that could arise from her simply not answering. Though, she debated for a moment. There was no certainty she was any safer telling him over not telling him, not with the history of her species. He could just as easily become violent based on knowing what she was as he could in her refusing to tell him. The slightly short fuse when it came to nicknames, though, made up her mind for her instantly as she glared at him, teeth sharpening a moment - the one painless change that she could play with all day without a care in the world.
My name isn't "sweetie", it's Vitae! And I'm a draca, if you must know.
The words were growled, soft enough to avoid reverberating down the tunnels to anyone who might be around, but loud enough he would no doubt hear them. With that, she was standing up and brushing herself off, annoyance wearing off quick, though her arms stayed crossed. Each hand, hidden beneath the cape that was always draped around her shoulders, grasped the hilt of a dagger, just in case. She didn't know how to use them, not before the change anyway. But, collective memory filled in a lot of blanks, and she'd been practicing for almost a year now.

WHAT was under it? a complete mystery, he figured he might look suspicious like that, but to be quite frank, he didn't care. no one saw his right eye, besides him. holding in a chuckle, he rubbed subconsciously at the scar at the bridge of his nose- an irritating habit of his.
HE awaited his answer on to what she was, not missing the flinch that the girl visibly did. almost growing frustrated with the long wait he was forced to experience, the red-haired demon let out a pretty dramatic sigh, rested one elbow on his knee, and placed his chin in the palm of his hand. but it was mere moments after he had done that to gain his answer.
'OH, well, sorry vitae,' kishou said, feigning an apologetic tone. returning to his former position where both elbows were on their respective knees, hands hanging down, resting on the balls of his feet, he grinned. he hadn't quite pronounced her name right. it was a little weird. 'mind if i just call you vee? vitae is a little troublesome. or i could just keep calling you sweetie.' chuckling in amusement, his tail swished back and forth, almost like a puppy.
'I'M kishou,' he introduced himself without being asked. 'and i have no idea what a draca is.' for some reason, the demon felt like vitae might be surprised at that. was he just out of the loop? who knew, he never tried to make an attempt to be 'in-the-loop.'
HE really hadn't expected for her to stand, and immediately stood after her. 'hey, are you leaving?' he asked, sounding disappointed. when kishou found someone that interested him in any way- he tended to not let go. his hand dropped to her shoulder. 'at least let me walk with you?' he gave an innocent smile, seeming genuine.

The longer he didn't attack, the easier she'd be able to fend him off if he did. She was hardly as helpless as she often looked. She was tiny, five foot three, and thin, hardly looking like she had enough muscle to fight off your average stranger, let alone anyone else or more than one attacker. This, of course, was not the case. Fighting was in her blood, in the blood of her species. They were all capable of fighting better than average, no matter what. It was just who they were. She blinked twice at his given nickname, surprisingly one she hadn't heard before - the flash of intrigue faded just as fast into a scowl when he brought around mention of that dreaded nickname, the one all the stupid thugs who cornered her, thinking her easy prey, had used.
Her hands fell from the concealed daggers slowly, hesitantly, watching for some sort of indication of a lie on not knowing what a draca was. That was the closest to surprise he'd get - that sudden burst of relaxation, as if a weight had been taken off her chest and she could breath again. He didn't ask explicitly what a draca was - so she didn't tell him. Instead, she just huffed, returning to the name topic for a moment, mixing the two once more.
Vee's... fine. And I'd rather prefer if you didn't spread that around. My race.
"Fine" was, of course, what she said - but she couldn't deny she actually sort of liked it. As soon as she spun, and a brief instant before he caught up with her, there was the curve of a small smile on her lips. It fell away fast enough, though, when she started at the hand placed on her shoulder, hardly having expected it.
Well, yeah, I do still have to find a place to stay tonight. The earlier you start looking, the better luck you get.
Spoken like a street kid, though she was anything but. She'd grown up a happy, regular kid. Going to school, flirting with boys, giggling with friends, sneaking out to parties... She'd been pretty average, really. Then she'd turned eighteen, figured out what she was, ran away, and ended up here. From heaven to hell in a matter of minutes. With a soft sigh, more to herself than anything, she set back on the path she'd intended before he'd shown up, pulling the hood of her cape back finally, pulling some of the long white strands of hair out of her eyes, trying to smooth out the static-y ones. Then, for a moment, manners got the best of her, and her head turned slightly to the side, smiling at him in return.
And anyway, there's a coat of grim on this tunnel. I'd rather not be sitting in it.

SPREADING his arms out- almost in excitement, those arms took the jacket with him, splaying it out behind him like a pair of wings. he hadn't intended it that way, he just got very animated when he talked, no matter if he was very happy, or if he was just plain pissed off. his wariness of the tunnel was completely gone in an instant, that grin growing toothier, those fangs of his showing plain as day. his tail waved rhythmically behind him as if a dad wagging it's tail. and as if he had read her mind- which he hadn't because he doesn't have that ability, he spoke.
'YOU like the nickname vee, don't you? well i'll try hard to call you that instead of sweetie. though i think sweetie is much more fitting.' the words went with his hand- and jacket- movements. of course he'd be good at reading people. that smile had given it all away in a mere moment. you had to good at reading others be when you're the leader of a gang. lack of the ability to do so could result in mass corruption within the gang, and the entirety of it falling apart.
'AND i won't tell anyone `bout you bein` a draca or whatever. none of my business, so there's no reason i would tell anyone.' kishou's wide grin faded back to a normal, and genuine smile- something he didn't often do. those appearances of happiness and excitement tended to be full-on grins or cocky smirks. not now though.
'Y'KNOW, vee, i've got a good place to stay. probably better than anything you'll find at this time of day,' by the tone of his voice, it was clear that he had no ill intentions towards the draca girl. he sounded honest, wanting to help look out for someone like her. he'd never felt that way before. but he figured he might as well do what his gut was telling him. his gut had never steered him the wrong way.

Yet, she said nothing, just pretending to ignore him, though it was painfully obvious she wasn't. How could she? They were the only two here, after all, and it wasn't exactly a loud place. It made it rather difficult to ignore anything, really. But the next words, they would have sobered her a bit regardless. She nodded a bit, hands shoving in her pockets, looking far more at the ground than the path ahead.
Good.
Just one word, soft and muttered and more to herself than to him. She wasn't about to explain, not unless asked. She didn't feel she had to. Instead, she just kept walking, nearly getting lost in her own thoughts, the memories as they washed over her again. They came at the most inopportune times, really. She'd learned to ignore them, just searching her memory banks when she needed to. It worked better.
Then he made an offer, or at least what could pass as one. Her steps slowed a moment, regarding him out of the corner of her eye, hesitant to accept it. For all she knew, it was a trap. She had no reason to think so personally, of course - but still, there were a million voices in her head screaming at her not to take him up on that offer. Voices of those long gone, though. In this world, one needed to be a little reckless to get by. And anyway, she could defend herself. Her wings folded up, cracking and popping back into her back, disappearing. They left rips through her shirt, but that was entirely covered by the cape anyway. Still, she wouldn't say yes outright, not so easily. She'd never played easy to get.
Really? Good for you.
It ended up sounding more like she hadn't recognized the offer; not that she was going to correct anyone's thinking on that. In fact, she was almost glad it came out that way. Hell, if he wanted to ask, he was going to ask properly, if she had anything to say about it.

THOSE long legs of the demon stretched in long strides, though he was reduced to forcing himself to pace slower than usual. otherwise he might overtake the girl and he sure didn't want it to appear as if he was trying to get in front of her for any particular reason. he let his gaze wander as he awaited the girl's response, cringing at the disgusting walls of the railway. this whole place was dingy- but he was mostly used to it. and after that moment of silence, his attention was snapped back at the draca's voice.
THE red-headed gang leader grinned almost devilishly at vitae's response to his 'offer'. or course, with his cocky mindset, he had just assumed that she would understand right away. maybe she wasn't as smart as he thought... no- she had known. she had to have known. she was playing it off as she hadn't gotten the hint. at least that's what he was assuming for the moment- there couldn't be any other way!
'OH, did you not get that?' kishou asked, sounding almost condescendingly, though not quite. if he had been talking to someone else, the tone would have made that person he was speaking to feel like a complete idiot. yet, he was being careful around vitae. she interested him. all the reason to keep it safe. keep her around. hopefully she would take to him how he'd taken to her.
'I WAS offering. you could stay there with me. there's more than one spot to sleep on.' that green eye of his glinted mischievously, as if excited at the prospect of housing someone. being responsible for someone besides the people in his gang. the long and thin black tail joined the excited idea, swishing back and forth like an eager puppy.

In fact, she more than smiled, as that smile quickly carried on into a soft laugh, one that sounded rather sophisticated, like the gentle, but genuine, laugh of someone with some sort of privilege, someone who knew no hardship. It was a laugh learned in such circumstances, and something that had stayed with her despite everything else. That little grin, complete with the mischief of the average, partying teenage girl stuck, even as he properly offered.
Well. I suppose it couldn't hurt. After all, you try anything, I'll just eat you.
The response came fluidly, natural, but the smile faded a moment later when she realized he had no idea. He'd seen the wings, but not the dragon. The smile stayed gone again as her eyes, which had been dancing still with silent laughter, lowered from him back to the floor. Back to the defensive, nervous girl he'd run into.
Of course, just because she was looking at the ground didn't mean she was paying attention to where her feet were actually going. Not to mention, she'd never been the most graceful person around to begin with. Even if her balance had gotten better with her hand-to-hand combat practice over the past year, it wasn't enough to save her from her own mishaps and she soon found her toe hooking on something - her other foot's heel, she realized - and careening forward.
Just. Great.

No, Kishou didn't stare, he ogled her, before a wide, toothy grin spread across his face. He figured since she was laughing, even if it was just soft and almost slight, she would be smiling. And he was sure that smile would be just as beautiful as she. That inspired the demon to stride faster, overtaking her easily.
AND at that point, the one visible eye, green like the grass, clear and probably the only window to any of his hidden emotions, focused on her face. He was instantly pleased with the view, glad he had made the slight effort to get in front of her. But he didn't stop walking, oh, no, he continued, walking now in Vitae's speed, yet backwards. The red-haired demon didn't appear to have any troubles walking in such a way, that grin still on his face.
"YOU have a really beautiful smile, you know that?" Kishou put on his charming face, warm, hiding some of that general cockiness that he couldn't help but display. He didn't quite aim to embarrass her, but he was definitely hoping it had that effect.
BUT the little white haired draca's response surprised him more than excited him- though he was quite excited. It was like a sleepover! He'd never had a sleepover when he was young. It was a childish thought, but he didn't mind himself thinking that way, as long as it didn't voice itself.
"Eat me? What`cha mean by that?" he questioned, leaning his face closer to the draca just slightly, wanting to urge an answer from her. But it was then it happened. She tripped. She started to fall. It all moved in slow motion to the demon. He stopped walking quickly, his long, curled black tail stilling behind him.
It was then! He was a knight in shining armor. Vitae was his princess. And he was rescuing her from a horrid attacker- her own foot! Catching her with ease, the 'knight in shining armor' held her after catching her those long arms of his. He didn't steady her as most would do. He just held her up, a dramatically concerned look spreading across his face, though that smile remained.
"You okay?"

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z431/poshiloh/Written%20in%20the%20Stars/middle-4.png][scrolly:h(282),w(236),sy] At his compliment, she merely ducked her head further, hiding her face as her cheeks blushed a light pink. She'd been complimented before, many times, back at her high school. She'd been one of the popular girls, after all, and she had looked the part. You couldn't tell now, what with the cape covering her up all the time, but she'd had that sense of fashion, that flair for the dramatic when it was called for, the intelligence and means to get things done when and where she wanted, even at a young age. Small, but mighty. At least, that was what her adoptive parents always told her.
He moved on to the comment she vaguely wished she hadn't said, and for a moment she wasn't sure quite how to reply. She could tell him, of course. But, then again, he might no believe her. Or perhaps she'd lose her place to stay the night. Or something else rather terrible in some form or another - it would be some sort of law of the universe. Bring her to a high only to let her fall and crash back into the ground, hard. She settled for something rather more mysterious than anything.
That's for me to know and you to maybe find out someday.
Of course, that comment didn't make it any better, she realized. She really was out of practice with this whole wording thing, because that phrase there implied she intended to stick around. That, currently, was set to a "not a snowball's chance in hell," and she wasn't expecting it to change any time soon. Then again, she hadn't intended much of this little meeting at all.
Him catching her was, at the very least, a bit unexpected. Him holding on to her after instead of just propping her up, totally taking advantage of the moment more than was theoretically proper, that was completely hit out of the ball park and left her stunned for quite a few moments. She gathered her feet under her - if he was going to support her to keep her from continuing her fall, then by all means, she was going to abuse that fact and use him as a balancing point - and stood straight again, consequently pulling herself out of the immediate hold he had. Unfortunately, there was definitely no hiding her face this time - and this time it was beet red.
Fine. I'm fine.
