The emotion that spread throughout him did not express itself physically, as if he did not want to offend the draca. And it was concern. Not just concern for her shivering, but also concern for her half faked smile.
It's not over-exertion, I'm fine. Just because I can control my body temperature doesn't mean I avoid feeling feverish when its higher is all.
"You'll be okay by tomorrow, right?" Kishou finally asked after that long bout of silence. His gaze only remained on Vee for a few moments, before glancing back up at the sky. This was a sight he had never seen before.
Being raised and living in the city and suburbs definitely had it's downfalls, besides the warmer nights and the ease at getting to people and getting a hold of them. But this... this was beautiful. Through those branches and leaves he could see stars. He wasn't sure he'd even seen them before.
They were purely amazing, creating dazzling shapes in the endless sky. Even some clouds were visible, the lack of lights making everything so clear.
Kishou resisted the urge to release a dreamy sigh. If only his princess didn't have to keep him warm... then maybe they could have enjoyed the night sky together. Relaxed, peaceful. Even though he couldn't technically fall asleep, Vee could, and he could go into a temporary rest-state. It'd be wonderful. Maybe lower in the mountains were less cold.
Yup, contemplating that for the future.

She mumbled, as if that should have been obvious. she didn't know if he believed her, but she didn't care either way, since it was completely true and she was far too tired to bicker about it until he believed her. So, instead, she turned her eyes away, face practically buried in his side, and she closed her eyes. She wasn't about to admit it, but it was rather comfortable, and the comparable chill from him certainly minimized the feverish feeling, at least for now.
Even after she drifted to sleep, her mind was hardly at rest through the night and instead flashed through pictures and memories, at least all from the better times of draca society, when Sanctuary was still hidden and safe. It brought a smile to her lips, especially each time glimpses of her parents came into view, and she always knew exactly which ones they were.
Of course, all good things must end and, with the sun still relatively low in the sky at seven in the morning, the dreams changed for the worse and there was the clash of metal on metal, the burning heat of flames and then the one sound that startled her out of her sleep and sent her into a jump that upset and quickly flipped the hammock on the both of them; a gunshot. Not a real one, mind you, but it had been real enough sounding to jolt her awake.

Both eyes were half open, and he just appeared as if he was lost in thought. He wasn't quite "all there," but nor was he completely out of it. He was aware of his surroundings enough to realize the sun was rising- slowly but surely-, and to feel Vitae jump as her dream awoke her.
But it hadn't just been a jump after all. In her sudden awaking, she apparently flipped the entire hammock on the both of them. And maybe fortunate for the red-haired demon, and maybe not so fortunate for Vitae, Kishou landed flat on his back, under his princess.
The air was knocked out of his lungs in his surprise, his eyes opening wide, surprised. He was definitely fully aware, and fully confused now. Not feeling up to sitting up quite yet, he laid his head back down after lifting it just slightly to peer at the draca girl.
"Are you alright, princess?"

In fact, she didn't even get a chance to respond to the actual position they'd landed in at all before he spoke. And, with the freshest image in her mind being the death of her parents, she, for once, didn't just stop herself from reacting.
A hand formed into a fist, whacking him none too lightly in the chest, only feeling vaguely bad about potentially having hurt him before she rolled off and away, unable to stand up immediately due to the hammock overhead. When she was no longer underneath it, she got up, scowling at him and brushing herself off.
Stop calling me that!
She growled, no real explanation why right away as she finally got to rid herself of the feverish feeling, lowering her body temperature back to normal. She was still glaring at him as she turned to muttering, though the words were all soft enough they could easily have been incoherent and blurred together to him. She didn't know; and she seriously hoped they were, after she said them.
I don't need the damn constant reminder.

It knocked him in the chest, and he almost got the air knocked out of him again. He wouldn't be surprised if he got a bruise from the strong draca. For being such a small girl, she was tough.
"What was that for?!"
The demon laid there for a few moments after asking those four words in an almost defensive tone. From what he had just seen, she was the one that woke herself up, and she was the one that flipped them over on the hammock. And she was the one that landed on him. He had no reason to suspect it was the princess nickname causing her to react so poorly.
Stop calling me that!
So that was why she was acting like this. Rolling about a foot on the ground so he would not be under tha hammock anymore, the red-head returned to his feet. Folding his arms, he put on a playful pouty face.
"You punch me because I called you princess? I called you that yesterday and you seemed just fine!"
And of course, with his fantastic demon-hearing, it was only slightly difficult to hear what Vitae said. The pouty face was gone, replaced by a look that said 'explain please.' His right eyebrow was lifted, the left slightly curved downward.
"What do you mean?"

He'd had plenty of time to try and kill her by now and hadn't even seemed to think about it. For nearly a good half a minute, she simply stared at him, not saying a word. Saying it would mean finally admitting it to herself, and she wasn't keen on getting forced into that. But then again, she didn't really have a choice now, much to her dismay. Finally, she looked away from him, though her face told anyone watching it she was hardly happy.
I mean that what you see as some sort of pet name is fitting. A little off, perhaps, but mostly accurate.
Her voice stayed soft, her mouth set in an unhappy frown as she stared, unblinking, at the ground, eyes focusing in on a singular blade of grass, trying not to feel the weight of responsibility as it settled square on her shoulders, but unable to stop it anyway.
I'm from the royal line. The only one still alive, and I would have been first in line for ruling anyway, even if I wasn't.
Her toe kicked at a small stone, sending it scattering through the woods. She hated every second of this, of being forced to remember exactly who she was, who she was born to be without any choice in the matter. She didn't want it, any of it, but it wasn't like there was anyone to hand it off to any more.

The same look he'd received in the railway tunnel, save the fear. He'd made it quite clear he wasn't out to kill her. He killed- yes. But never without reason. He wasn't that kind of person. But that look made him feel like that kind of person. Like he had done something truly horrible.
But apparently, he was close enough- he'd been constantly reminding Vitae of how she was of the royal line- as she said. How she was the last one. So yes, the demon felt bad about it. But he wasn't sure he would be able to stop calling her that. It'd become a bit of a habit in such a short time.
"I'm sorry. I was thinking of urm- being your knight in shining armor." The red-head only held the slightest bit of sheepishness, mostly feeling pretty proud of himself for blatantly flirting as such. Hopefully it would not back-fire on him.
"I didn't mean to make you feel that way... But don't you think you shouldn't feel so upset about it? You don't have to be a princess anymore." He tread carefully with his words, and truly hoped he'd been careful enough. The last thing he wanted was for Vitae to grow bitter with him again.
He just wanted to help her. Get close to her. Sometimes he felt proud, because it worked. And other times, he felt as if nothing worked. As if he was taking one step forward and two steps back.

It wasn't that she'd never been told she was pretty, or been flirted with, or anything of the sort. It was just... different this time. She was used to hormone-controlled teenage boys vying for her, and had easily learned to ignore it. He, however open he was about it, seemed shy nonetheless. She'd never call him on it, of course, just like she said nothing about his confession and she tore her eyes away, taking two short steps away from him to lean her side against the trunk of the tree to which one end of the hammock was tied, choosing to pay more attention to the next series of words he spoke. They were easier to deal with.
It's not your fault. It's not like you knew.
She murmured softly with a half shrug, eyes downcast a bit but not as hard as they'd gone for that brief moment when she'd told him the truth. She sighed softly, head tipping to rest against the trunk of the tree as well.
Except the thing is, I do. The massacre was here, at Sanctuary, but that doesn't mean there aren't others out there. Most draca, they rely on commands, on having orders to follow. Eventually, they will come looking.
Slowly, she turned, her back pressing against the tree before she sunk to the ground. She'd avoided it long enough that she hadn't really been thinking about how she actually felt about the situation - beyond the fact that she hated it. Curling her knees up to her chest, her arms slipped around her legs, hugging them loosely as her head leaned forward to rest on the edge of her knees. Finally, the words that had always been there but had been constantly pushed away surfaced, soft and most certainly scared.
And I have no idea what I'm going to do.

Sure, he didn't know, he hadn't asked. He still felt a little bad about it... Maybe a little bit more than little, but the lone draca's words surely helped him regain his dignity.
"After all this time, they'll keep looking?" The demon looked surprised. He wasn't sure if it was just because of the need to follow orders like Vitae said, or if it was for the reason they were loyal to their fellow dracas... but all he knew was that it was extremely odd. As a demon, his race didn't hold any feelings towards others of the same race. They meant nothing to each other.
And I have no idea what I'm going to do.
The words sounded afraid, almost sad to the demon's ears, and it brought a further frown to his face.
Approaching his princess, Kishou knelt down beside her, sitting on his feet almost in a casual manner. His thick arms- not too thin, nor too muscular, wrapped themselves around her in a hug. Nothing too intimate, but definitely too close to be just a simplistic comforting hug.
"Well, if you need it, I could try to help." His voice was warm, encouraging, that curled tail of his raised upwards.

Then he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer than was necessary, but she didn't bother to pull away. If anything, she leaned into the embrace, thankful for some kind of support, even if from someone who might not truly understand. At least he was trying.
When the world is your enemy, you turn to the ones who would protect you. They'll come, if they have any reason to believe I'm alive at all, they'll come.
She finally said in no more than a whisper, turning slightly to end up burying her head in his chest, words muffled by his clothes, not that she cared. The closeness, the being able to finally trust someone again, it overrode just about everything else. Especially now, with such a topic being discussed, she clung to it. At least, for a minute or two, before she realized what she was doing and pulled away, cheeks tinged vaguely pink. She very nearly asked why he even cared at all, but she wasn't sure it was such a polite question to ask. So, she resorted to her second instinct.
... Thank you.
She didn't specify what for, though she did mean just about everything. She shifted awkwardly, a little unsure for a moment before she caved, leaning over to lean against him again. A year with almost no human contact at all had left its mark on her, having been so used to being around others before.

It took everything he had to resist the sigh of relief that gathered in his chest. So he just held that embrace, held Vitae to his chest, knowing he shouldn't feel as proud as he did at this moment.
Vitae was feeling lost, confused, she didn't know what to do. She had even admitted it, something the demon had not thought that she would do. But she did, and he felt just awful for feeling pleased with the face in his chest.
The demon did not miss her blush, and maybe the skeptical look in her eyes when she pulled backwards and thanked him. Thank him? For what? Really, he'd do practically anything for her- within reason of course- and especially if it was helping her. There was just something about her.
"You don't need to thank me y'know," the demon voiced, one of his signature, but honest smirks crawling on the his face. One eyebrow was lifted, as if he was curious why she was thanking him. He had a pretty good idea anyways.
His arms had dropped back to his own sides when his princess had pulled away, but with her leaning into him again, one arm- his left- went contently over her shoulders. He wanted to say something like Why the change of heart?, but he figured it would be just a tad douche-y, and would definitely ruin the moment. But instead, he said,
"You're not alone. I dunno if you were before- but y'got my support."

[atrb=border,0,false][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,500,true] | [atrb=background,http://i55.tinypic.com/jj1m5v.png][scrolly:h(175),w(460),sy] Vee could have contentedly stayed right where she was, and indeed happily did so for a few minutes before her stomach decided to remind her that food was a necessary part of life and that, right at this moment, it would be appreciated. Greatly. With a sigh, she got to her feet, reaching a hand down to help him up, not that he truly needed it. A quick moment of taking a walk through her memories told her where to find one of the nearby armouries and, with a tip of her head that invited him to follow, she set off in that direction.
She stepped in to the room inside the cave tunnels and paused a moment, glancing around. There were various armour suits – some sized for dragons, others for men. Among them were tables layered with daggers and needles, racks with shields, barrels with wooden and metal rods for varying lengths and design – some even compacted into small cylinders that were easy to hide. Bracketed to the wall were swords as well, most plain, but one particularly decorated with jewels in the hilt and symbols inscribed in the blade that, if you knew ancient draca, read ”the morning star”. The sword of the emperor or, if there was none, the sword of the empress. In this case, hers. Out of an instinct to take it, she did, though she turned most of her attention to grabbing a quiver and bow.
With a smile that, considering the ease with which she handled the sword now strapped to her hip and the bow and arrows, seemed almost dangerous, she brushed past him again, swinging the quiver over her shoulder and keeping her bow in hand.
Come on. Time for some breakfast.
She was used to living this way; hunting when she was hungry. It took her no more than a moment of concentration to find the scent of a young deer; young enough to be naïve, particularly considering the safety of this area now, but old enough to not be within a herd. A stampede could be dangerous, but a lone buck posed no problem, especially since it wasn’t rutting season yet. The younger age would help as well; even if his antlers were growing, they wouldn’t be too large like some older bucks. With a scent pinned down, she sped off, as silent and deadly as a wolf pack. At least, to the prey.
It didn’t take her long to find the deer and she held up a hand to stop Kishou from continuing past her by accident, then raised her finger to her lips, signalling him to be quite. There was an implied “or else.” Quietly, and for the first time in her own life, technically, she drew an arrow from the quiver, notching it into the bow and raising to aim. Remembrance of training from centuries ago took hold as her breathing steadied and slowed, her focus solely on the hunt now. She drew her arm back, paused a moment, then released the arrow. It flew true – but too late. Something else had frightened the deer into running and as the arrow embedded itself into a tree trunk, her attention snapped back to the wind. She felt her heart sink to her feet.
Shit.
The word, hardly more than breathed out, reached the air just as the creature that had her nervous now lumbered into sight. A dragon. Not a draca, who were all easily smaller, but a real, true dragon. Even a large draca alone had trouble standing up to a dragon, and she wasn’t exactly the largest draca to walk the earth. In fact, she was one of the smallest. Slowly, she stood just enough to back up slowly, but with her focus now on something else, her silence paid the price. Her heel crunched down on a stick before she could catch herself and there was a deep growl from the creature easily twice the size of her changed form. She nearly turned to bolt and drag him with her – on the ground, they could probably outrun the dragon, since it wasn’t exactly an open field – but her reaction stopped as the fear in her eyes slipped away, the red darkening slightly as it was replaced with an almost reckless determination. A crooked smile curved across her face and she dropped the bow, not even bothering with the sword.
A crack of her knuckles and she wasn’t running away – but lunging toward the dragon instead, shifting as she did so, white form streaking through the trees at an easily faster pace. She may be half the size, but she was twice the speed, wings whipping out to lift her up and above, teeth digging into the dragon’s neck. She managed to keep up these nips and attacks – infuriating the beast to no end – for all of a minute before she sunk her teeth in more thoroughly. She was promptly tossed free, ripping scales from the creature’s neck in the process as she flew into a tree and slid to the ground, the sudden impact and pain sending her right back to human form. Except it wasn’t really Vee anymore – at least, not her mind – and determination forced her back to her feet, drawing the sword despite swaying where she stood. Vee would have gladly accepted, even asked for, help – but Lauren, now in control, was far too stubborn for such a thing. And if someone didn’t act fast, Vee was going to be the one paying the price.

[atrb=border,0,false][atrb=cellSpacing,0,true][atrb=cellPadding,0,true][atrb=width,416,true] | [atrb=background,http://i56.tinypic.com/20i9847.png][scrolly:h(222),w(373),sy] To say the very least, Kishou was surprised with this sudden almost "warrior-like" act from Vitae- except for the fact he was entirely sure it was no act. She was pulling memories from her past- he assumed, and headed straight to a room that held countless weapons. He watched as she chose her, almost tempted to grab one of his own, just an extra to have just in case something happened to his beloved scythe. But he couldn't do that- it felt like stealing, and he did not like that idea. Vitae had not given him any permission to take anything. His scythe was enough anyways, he figured it could withstand a lot. He wouldn't allow anything to happen to it anyways.
As they headed out, the demon felt almost helpless, his tail hanging out loosely, not held up in excitement, and not drooping in dejection. A relaxed stature, constantly curled at the end, and always regal in appearance. He only felt this way for the simple reason-that he had no idea where anything in these mountains were. Where he would go if he got lost- he had not the slightest idea. He had to rely on his very princess to lead him around, while he followed like a little lost puppy. It was not something he was used to.
But he endured, watching almost in dismay as the draca focused that bow and arrow at the deer. He'd never hunted before- mostly because he had never wanted to. Animals were definitely one of his weaknesses, he cared much more for them than humans or other people. He ate meat of course- he just never liked experiencing that animal dying or anything of that sort. So he felt more than a little relieved as the deer ran off and Vitae missed. He knew that they had to eat. But next time he'd be more prepared and could avoid watching.
But that relief changed when he spotted the dragon. The sheer size of it sent his eyes widening in surprise, prepared to run just like his princess. But her entire demeanor decided to change it appeared at the last minute, and he could do nothing- out of surprise- as she shifted and flew at the dragon with unbelievable speed. What had happened to that fear she had held moments ago?
Kishou felt nothing more than surprise for mere moments, before Vitae was hit into a tree, and was forced to return to her human form. That sent a bout of worry and fear into the red-head's chest, his eyes narrowing at the large and scaled beast. How dare he? And now was when the demon's short temper expressed itself, his body lunging forward. Believing 'Lauren' was still Vitae, he grabbed her shoulders- none too gently, but not hard enough to hurt her, and pushed her against the tree.
"Stay here."
And he was moving again, launching himself at the dragon. His movements appeared elegant, his hang grabbing at the scythe necklace, yanking it and unhooking the chain in one swift movement. The scythe elongated, becoming taller than the demon himself.
Kishou, being a demon, jumped much higher than a human could even dream of doing, the scythe's tip slicing open the dragon's throat easily. It wasn't something he wanted to do- but he'd rather kill the dragon than have the dragon kill Vitae or himself. He just hoped that would do the trick and kill it quickly.
But of course, with the red-head's luck, the demon managed it's own strike before it went down, it's claws giving Kishou a decent-sized gash across his stomach. Of course, it wasn't deep enough to be fatal- but that didn't mean it didn't hurt. But the demon wouldn't show that, getting up from the ground- where he fell after attacked- glaring at the dragon as the light faded from it's eyes. One hand remained on his 'wound'- turning to Vitae.
"Hey, you alright, princess?"

When he returned, bleeding but alive, nothing but pure anger ruled her eyes for a moment, teeth bared slightly, sharpened at the tips, pupils of her eyes narrowed like a they had been in her dragon form. Even without all that, there was something distinctly not Vee about her as she huffed out a few words.
I didn't need your help, demon.
She didn't offer him even one more word, not deeming him worthy, but something in Vitae stopping her from outright getting rid of the filthy creature. She swung the sword in graceful, powerful arches through the air before letting it slide back into its sheath, proving a point as best she could. She could control Vee, yes, but only within the action Vee herself would take. Not necessarily ones she could, of course, but ones she would. And Vitae, somewhere in that silly little soul, would not ever purposely hurt him physically, let alone kill him. Something that angered Lauren to no end. Still, though, she couldn't keep control long and after a few moments of defiant glares sent in his direction, the shade of her eyes flickered, lighter to darker then back again, like a light bulb that was almost dead. Until, finally, the lighter shade took over, and all trace of the draconic features vanished entirely, Vitae drifted backwards to catch her weight on the tree and slide to the ground, not a trained warrior like Lauren who could push the pain aside so easily without motivation to do so.
Her eyes skimmed the dead dragon, relief flooding them, right alongside confusion - she remembered none of it. Had the dragon perhaps caught her and flung her here, before she could run? Perhaps knocked her out? That would explain the black gap in her memory. Fear gripped her heart a moment until her eyes found Kishou, alive and, albeit not well, not fatally injured, at the very least. She shot to her feet, wavering a moment before she steadied herself, stepping towards him, concern written all over her face.
You're hurt. Let me take a look.

Not once before did she seem disgusted like this at the fact he was a demon. He appeared human and acted enough like one, and she didn't dislike humans that he knew of. So why would she be so disgusted with him after he had just saved her life?
He did not even respond to those ungrateful words, two-toned eyes just narrowing in that hurt he felt, along with a forming distrust. So she didn't like the fact he was a demon, huh? Turning his body sideways so he wasn't facing her any longer, the demon hoped that that would display his unhappiness effectively. He ignored the show that she put on with the sword, adverting his eyes disappointingly. This was so unlike her- and he felt confused. But he also felt that all of that was enough of a display to show him that she did not trust him, nor held any interest in him any longer.
But he had to wonder, was it because he had defended her as such, that she suddenly disliked him? She'd definitely had appeared to like him enough earlier as she had leant on him and practically cuddled with him. But now, everything felt so different. Her demeanor, her attitude. Was being a demon such a crime to her?
Due to his adverted eyes and sideways position, Kishou had not seen his -maybe former- princess's eyes flicker and change colors, so he had no way to think anything changed now. She was still the same Vee that had just displayed her hatred towards him.
So when she spoke, sounding concerned, he just scoffed, not even looking at her. The concern had to be fake. How could she hate him one minute, and worry the next? His whole stature screamed an almost frustration with her, the tension high. His feet began to carry him away from the draca, his right hand still on the wound given to him by the dragon.
"Take a look? But I'm a demon. What does it matter to you?"
Just as Vitae had done when she got up, Kishou wavered as he walked, and he had to spread his legs to steady himself without anything to grab a hold of. Just because he was a demon did not mean he was indestructible.
